ACAENA

  1. A.buchananii   

Vigorous semi-evergreen ground cover.  Tiny compound blue-ish grey toothed leaves make a dense mat from which, during mid summer spherical burrs appear floating over the top, similar to a scaled down WW1 mine at sea.  Prefers semi-shade or sun.  Easy.

A. ptarmica ‘The Pearl‘       

Medium height Achillea with waves of pure white double  and semi double pom-pom flowers from June through to August.  Finely toothed dark green foliage.  Excellent in a sunny position. AGM

Glossy strap-like leaves and chunky double pale blue tubular flowers held in a neat globe.

AGASTACHE

A. foeniculum ‘Liquorice Blue’

Superb hardy variety with fragrantly scented leaves and impressive spikes of blue flowers throughout summer into early September.  Good on poor soils and a good cut flower.

  1. A.foeniculum ‘Golden Jubilee’

Stunning chartreuse foliage which is rather stunning is complimented by rich lilac-blue flowering spikes in mid-summer into autumn.  Hardy perennial preferring sun to partial shade, does well on poor soils.  Young foliage is quite edible and like ‘Liquorice Blue’ can be added to salads.  Good Cut flower.

A. scrophulariaefolia

Impressive tall growing hardy perennial Hyssop up to 180cm.  Broad lanceolate leaves topped with dense spikes of white through to lilac blue flowers during summer.  Native throughout the northern USA and southern Canada.

ALCHEMILLA

A. alpina

Low growing perennial with dark green leaves with a silvery edge.  Sprays of greenish yellow flowers during summer.  Non invasive.  Does well in sun and partial shade.

A. erythropoda

Dwarf from of mollis.  Pretty scalloped blue – green leaves.  From late spring through to summer produces a froth of pom – pom like flowers. Hardy.

ALLIUM

A. albopilosum (syn, christophii)

Open rounded flowering head like a skeletal football.  Small Deep purple.  Interesting on gravel.

A. hollandicum ‘Purple Sensation’

Good sized deep purple flower heads larger than a cricket ball.  Sturdy stems keep them upright.  Good growing through a foil plant.

A. karataviense

Native to Turkestan with large slightly folded strap like leaves which bear a pink-ish white margin and low round dense white flowers.

A. multibulbsom nigrum

Neat stumpy foliage and tall stems of dens white flower heads, tennis ball in size.

A. senescens subsp. montanum var. glaucum

Unusual twisted swirling leaves which are bluish-grey.  The leaves are also broad and flat.  Clump forming.  From July through to August lilac globular umbels appear and are mildly fragrant.

AMPELODESMOS

A. mauritanica

Impressive grass found naturally in dry rocky locations in the Mediterranean.  Very tough rush like leaves forms a clump from which flowering panicles emerge greenish yellow in colour with a hint of purple.  Plant in a sunny position.

ANEMANTHELE

A. lessoniana (syn Stipa arundinacea)

Pheasants tall grass.  Very versatile evergreen grass, forming dense mounds of erect leaves.  Fantastic Autumn colours ranging from bronze to copper gold.  Produces burnt umber seed heads which arch right down through the foliage to the base of the plant. AGM

Pure white semi-double flowers held on tall stems from late summer through to early October.  Makes a good cover for spring bulbs since it appears late in spring.  Hardy herbaceous perennial.

ANGELICA

A. ebony

An extremely dark angelica.  With almost black finely cut, shiny leaves.  Dark purple buds open to delicate sprays of pink flowers.

A. gigas

Ideal at the back of the border, simple green foliage and large rich burgundy dome shaped flower heads. As this is a monocarpic species cut dead heads off before seed sets.

A. lactiflora “Guizhou”

Moisture loving so damp soils are best.  Tall dark foliage which is cut and divided with silvery veins topped with silvery flower head which are branched from July through to September,

A. ludoviciana ‘Valerie Finnis’

Named after the famous horticulturalist.  Fine silvery aromatic foliage.  Hardy herbaceous coping well with drought when established.  Dull yellow flowers during summer which are not a point of interest.  Foliage is good for drying and flower arranging.

Low growing with broadly ovate green leaves tinted red is first flush of growth.  Forms a mound of tightly held clusters of mid pink flowers with yellow centres.

  1. A.himalaicus

Himalaya Aster is a perennial aster with utmost showy, large, rich lavender blue flower heads with a greenish-yellow disk above narrow leaves. Native of meadows and rock crevices in Eastern Asia. For any rich, well drained soil in a sunny to partially shaded spot.

A.  laevis “Calliope”

Glossy dark green leaves and near black stems make this aster a stunning border plant.  From late Summer through to October single and irregular double lilac-blue flowers are produced.  Looks good growing through Salvia turkistanica.

A.  laterifolius “Coombe Fishacre”

Early lush green foliage turning purple-black as the season turns to Autumn.  Produces a mass if lilac daisies with rosie brown centers from August into September. AGM

Low growing compact Aster best at the front of the border.  Shimmering white daisy flower with rich yellow centers held over compact dark green foliage.  I normally refer tall billowing types but this is stunning.

Min green small ovate leaves on erect thin stems.  Masses of small blues purple flowers with yellow centers.

  1. A.tongolensis

Perennial aster native to the East Indies with utmost showy, large, pale lavender blue flower heads with an orange-yellow disk above narrow leaves. Native of meadows and rock crevices in China. For any rich, well drained soil in a sunny to partially shaded spot.

A. turbinellus

The Turbinate Aster is a native of Illinois with bright green lanceolate foliage and dark violet-streaked stems. Clear mauve flowers with bright yellow centres are produced en mass from Late summer onwards.

A.  umbellatus var. umbellatus

The Flat Top Aster.  Unusual plant with glossy deeply veined leaves which hug the narrow stems.  White or very pale blue open flowers are held in a flat formation similar to an Umbelliferae.  Striking in its oddity.  Flowers from Late summer

ATRIPLEX

A. hortensis var. rubra

Hardy annual red orach.  Deep burgundy foliage followed by deep burgundy flowers and hanging panicles of seeds..  Edible leaves.

AJUGA

A. reptans ‘Catlins Giant’

Large form of reptans with broadly ovate leaves that are rich burnt burgundy and tall flowering spikes with rich purple flowers.

  1. A.r. ‘Little Court Pink’

Green leaved form with lovely pink tinges.  Spikes of baby pink flowers are produced from early summer.  A charming alternative to the red leaves forms.

ACONITUM

A. napellus       

Monkshood native to central & western Europe.  Hairless stems and much divided leaves with tall spires of intense blue/purple flowers from early summer.  Cheerily these plants have a long history of use as a poison, with cases going back thousands of years. During the ancient Roman period of European history the plant was often used to eliminate criminals and enemies, and by the end of the period it was banned and any one growing A. napellus could have been legally sentenced to death

A. podagraria ‘Variegatum’

Bishops Goutweed is a variegated form of Ground Elder which has delicate pale leaf margins first appearing brilliant yellow fading with age to grey silver.  Once established will tolerate dry shade and poor soils.  Young leaves can be eaten in salads.   Easy & Hardy.
