HELLEBORUS

H. argutifolius

Interesting Bowl-shaped, pendent, pale green, flowers from January to March.  Large glossy evergreen leaves make a strong impact.  The foliage is a long-lasting source of interest after the flowers have passed.

  1. H.foetidus AGM

Although commonly called the stinking hellebore it has a surprising delicate scent.  Flowers are held in nodding clusters. pale jade green with a burgundy margin.  A dome of finely cut evergreen glossy green foliage makes for a bold plant.  Ideal underplanting in woodlands and shrubberies, prefers dappled shade. Well self seed readily.

H. orientalis

The Lenten Rose.  Evergreen glossy foliage and nodding flowers from February to April in shades of rose, pink and white.

HELIANTHUS

H. salicifolius

Native to America this  sunflower has leaves like a willow.  Open lax habit needs staking.  From September to October multitude of small golden yellow sunflowers are produced.

H. tuberosus.

Species of sunflower native to the Eastern United States.  Cultivated widely across the temperate world for its tuber.  Growing in popularity, makes an excellent alternative to potato over the winter months.

HELICHRYSUM

  1. H.italicum. AGM                                                                                                                                  

Mound forming evergreen foliage.  Needle like foliage which is highly scented similar curry.  Tiny mustard coloured flowers throughout summer.

HELORAGIS

H. erecta “Wellington Bronze”

Rare to cultivation erect branching perennial from New Zealand.  Bronzed Foliage with serrated edges from even shaped low bush.  Flowers are yellow and not the main point of interest with this plant.  Fantastic companion to so many plants in the border.

HAKONECHLOA

  1. H.macra ‘Alboaurea’

Native to Japan a low mound forming deciduous grass with broad yellow and green stripped foliage which overlaps itself.  Neat with insignificant flowers in late summer.  Good in pots or borders tolerating sun to partial shade, but preferring heavy moist soils.
