LAVATERA

L. arborea ‘Variegata’

Large soft felt like leaves splashed and stripped irregularly with creamy yellow markings.  Semi-evergreen so this looks stunning on the terrace in winter.  Large mauve - purple flowers appear in early summer and look awful to my eyes.  Can reach 2 meters in height making quite a useful shrub for a hot border.

LEUCANTHEMUM

L. x superbum “Old Court Variety”

Stunning form with shredded white flowers, each petal appears to be curling around a yellow centre.  Very floriferous and unusual.  Full sun with good moist soil.

LEVISTICUM

L. officinale

Stunning broad flat foliage which a distinctive fragrance making a broad clump.  From its second year produces a tall flowering spire topped with small sulphur yellow flowers held in umbel’s.  Seed persists on the stem making for a lovely late summer display. 

Native to Tuscany and traditionally used in cooking.

LATHYRUS

L. davidii

Herbaceous perennial which occurs in thicket’s and open woodland throughout Russia through to Korea & China.  Feathered leaves on tall elegant stems and terminal racemes of lemon yellow flowers fading to orange gold with age.  Prefers rich well drained soils in sun to partial shade.

  1. L.odoratus ‘Cupani’

This is the only annual sweet pea grow and as such have a few for sae at the start of the year.  Strong original sweet fragrance which fills the house when picked.  Bicoloured flowers of deep magenta pink and rich purple.  This is reputedly the original sweet pea brought back to England in 1699 by a monk called Brother Cupani.  True or not it has a slight ecclesiastical colour about it.
